Why do I hear a knocking noise when I am in the process of stopping my vehicle?

I was driving home today and I started to hear this knocking noise in the front of my car, like a little gremlin was pounding on something underneath the car every time I was in the process of stopping. I know I have a torn cv boot and I heard that knocking sounds will happen when you make turns dew to this problem, but I was wondering if this torn boot can also make sounds when your in the process of stopping as well? Could this be something else? Am I in trouble here? Thanks
